DC Fire and EMS sent a boat about half-a-mile below the Lincoln Memorial along Ohio Drive SW around 7 p.m., but the woman had already been rescued by a civilian by the time firefighters arrived, the department said.
The good Samaritan was identified by NBC Washington as Jelani Clayton, who had pulled over to enjoy the view to get a break from sitting in traffic. That's when he saw a woman with a jacket zipped up over her face in the river, he told the outlet.
Clayton rescued the woman from the water and called 9-1-1, NBC reports.
The woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive, according to DC firefighters.
